Post-Construction Cleaning NYC: What's Included and When to Book
A renovation isn't really finished until the dust is gone. Even after contractors sweep up, fine dust settles on every ledge, inside cabinets and in vents, and it keeps resurfacing for days. A post-construction cleaning is built to deal with exactly that.
Why renovation dust needs extra attention
Drywall sanding, tile cutting and demolition create very fine dust that a regular dusting just pushes around. In NYC apartments, where renovated space is often small and close to living areas, it spreads quickly into closets, light fixtures and onto every horizontal surface. Getting it out takes repeated passes, top to bottom.
Post-renovation cleaning checklist
- Dust high areas first: light fixtures, door tops, trim and shelves
- Wipe walls, baseboards, door frames and switches
- Clean inside and outside of new or existing cabinets and drawers
- Wipe down counters, sinks, fixtures and appliance exteriors
- Clean window sills and interior windows where accessible
- Vacuum then mop floors, including corners and edges, to remove fine dust
How it differs from a standard cleaning
A standard cleaning maintains a home that's already in good shape. Post-construction cleaning assumes dust is everywhere, including inside storage and on surfaces that rarely get touched, so it takes more time and more passes. That's why it's priced separately and booked as a one-time service.
When to schedule cleaning after contractors finish
- Book after all sanding, painting and installation work is complete
- Make sure contractors have removed debris, leftover materials and large trash
- Give fresh paint and finishes time to dry as your contractor recommends
- Schedule before furniture, rugs and décor go back in when possible
If touch-up work is still planned, wait until it's done — otherwise new dust undoes the cleaning.
